Emberiza hortulana - spring

Ortolan Bunting

AGE – BEST CRITERIA:

Often difficult to age, and great care is required in the examination of the wing and tail. All birds, regardless of age, may show contrasts between two different generations of ad-type LC, MC and GC, which are of no use for ageing.

2cy show juv PP, PC and SS (but may have moulted innermost S6 during winter). Juv feathers may also still be present among RR, AL, CC and (rarely) TT. By now, these juv feathers are slightly bleached and rather worn and show a higher degree of contrast to the remaining post-juv/pre-br parts of the plumage than 3cy+ does. In difficult birds, make sure to check both wings since the moult may be slightly assymetrical and thereby offer better clues in one or the other.

Young birds could in theory be distinguished until the last juv feathers are shed during the post-br moult. However, with the progression of bleach and wear the two age groups may become inseparable. Due to individual variation we recommend that only typical spring/summer birds, showing a combination of characters, are aged.

2cy:

  • Most birds show retained juv SS while all TT are of ad-type. A slight variation (plus/minus one feather) is seen with some birds showing moulted ad-type S6 while others (rarely) may retain juv longest T3.
  • Regardless of the exact position, the above contrast (between ad-type TT and juv SS) is rather apparent because of slightly bleached juv SS.
  • AL and CC may also still contain juv feathers, relatively worn and bleached.
  • Tips of PP often (but not always) showing more wear and bleach than in ad.
  • Juv PC usually less dense and more worn than in ad, but differences are not always obvious.
  • Tail variable and RR may consist of 1) two ad-type generations, 2) mix of ad-types and juv generation or 3) a uniformly juv generation.

3cy+:

  • SS sometimes uniform pre-br, but often show contrast with 1-3 outer (and occasionally 1-2 innermost) SS retained post-br. These contrasts may sometimes be difficult to see but may, according to Jenni & Winkler (2020), be detected through a length difference in the feathers.
  • No contrast visible between TT and pre-br SS.
  • No juv feathers present in AL or CC.
  • Tips of PP often (but not always) in better condition, showing less wear and bleach than in 2y.
  • Ad PC usually denser and in better condition than in 2y, but differences are not always obvious.
  • Tail may consist of one or two ad-type generations.

2cy April. SS consists of a uniform juv generation, rather bleached and show apparent contrast towards ad-type TT. [1EV97880]

2cy, April. Similar to the previous bird, but note the presence of moulted pre-br innermost S6 (indicative of 2cy). [1EV97891 ]

3cy+, May (Mongolia). Outermost S1 post-br (like PP), contrasting to remaining pre-br SS2-6. Note absence of contrast between TT and inner SS. [90765947]

3cy+, May. Uniformly pre-br SS, showing no contrast to TT. [1EZ23066]

2cy April. Juv PP show, on average, more wear and bleach than ad post-br ones. But the variation is pronounced and only extremes are separable. [1EV97880]

2cy May (Mongolia). Another set of worn juv PP. [90765996]

3cy+ May. Ad-type PP are, on average, in slightly better condition, showing less wear and bleach. [2KV41096]

3cy+ May. Some ad birds, like here, may show more pronounced wear in PP and then become more difficult to separate from 2cy. [1EZ23066]

2cy April. Rather well kept juv PC and outer two AL. Still, note the rather sharp contrast to post-juv/pre-br GC and CC. [1EV97891]

2cy May. In this individual, the generational contrasts are difficult to work out. But PC are typical juv, worn and bleached. [2KR45553]

3cy+ May. PC, AL and CC in comparatively good condition, showing no sharp contrast to surrounding feather groups. [1EZ23066]

3cy+ May. Another version of ad-type PC, AL and CC. [2KV41096]

2cy April. Both R1 and right R4 moulted ad-type, rest of tail well kept juv. [1EV97880]

2cy May (Mongolia). A complete set of juv RR. Juv RR are generally more worn, show more pointed tips and are, on average, slightly narrower than in ad. [90765996]

3cy+ May. Ad-type tail showing RR that are quite broad, blunt-tipped and in rather good condition. Note that two ad generations of RR (both R1 and right R3 are pre-br while rest is post-br) are present. The pre-br right R3 is rather similar to left R3 in both shape and structure. [1EZ23066]

3cy+ May (Mongolia). Another ad-type tail showing two generations of ad RR. [90765953]
