Anas crecca - autumn

Eurasian Teal

AGE – BEST CRITERIA:

Both 1cy and 2cy+ slowly moult all RR as part of their pre-br moult, typically from Oct to Dec in males, while females often carry some juv RR into spring. Presence of juv RR is always diagnostic of a 1cy bird. Presence or absence of juv RR is the most reliable ageing character from summer to mid-Oct for males and to Feb for females, and a strong supplementary character for still some weeks after that. In 1cy males at least one juv R is often present well into Nov. Cloacal examination (in the case of males) and length of T2 are also very reliable. Other criteria seem to be subject to large variation.

1cy:

  • Juv RR are very distinctive, ending in a V-shaped notch with the feather shaft exposed. This is because fledgeling ducks grow a downy tip to the RR, and as the tip falls off it leaves behind this pattern. They are also narrow, brownish and often quite worn. Females are slower to moult the tail than males, so juv RR are often found well into spring. It must always be kept in mind that, as with any bird, some RR or even whole tails can be lost or randomly replaced.
  • In young males, penis very reduced until at least Dec. Please note that cloacal examination requires careful handling and practice.
  • T2 short. If T2 is shorter than tip of P7 when wing is semi-folded in natural position, the bird is a safe 1cy. If between P7 and P6, ageing based on this character is not recommended. Keep in mind that P1 is extremely reduced in ducks. Young males typically show juv TT until Nov-Dec, and females until Mar.
  • Other characters (design of T1, TC, shape of GC, fringing in LC and MC, shape of PP and PC and spotting in bill) are discussed in the images below. Beware that these characters are subject to much variation and should not be used in isolation.

2cy+:

  • Ad RR end in a point, are broad and grey. Sometimes two ad generations can be found (which is diagnostic of an ad bird) by judging a difference in coloration and wear. Finding growing RR is also useful. Females are slower to moult the tail than males, so two generations are often present well into spring.
  • In ad males, penis quite long and wide in diameter. Please note that cloacal examination requires careful handling and practice.
  • T2 long. If T2 is longer than the tip of P6 when wing is semi-folded in natural position, the bird is a safe 2cy+ until Nov-Dec (for males) or Mar (females). After these dates, most 1cy will show freshly moulted post-juv  TT which can be as long as in ad.
  • Other characters (design of T1, TC, shape of GC, fringing in LC and MC, shape of PP and PC and spotting in bill) are discussed in the images below. Beware that these characters are subject to much variation and should not be used in isolation.

1cy (male), October. All RR juv. Feather shafts exposed at the tips. [6A00050]

1cy (male), October. All RR juv. Compare to previous picture: there is variation on wear and how pronounced the forked-tip is. [6A00051]

1cy+ (male), November. Ad-type RR. In this individual no juv RR can be seen and date is advanced, thus tail not useful for ageing. [6432591]

1cy (male), November. Note one freshly moulted post-juv R1. Rest of the tail juv. [6429443]

2cy+ (male), October. Close-up of tail. In this individual, RR 1 and 3 are growing, while the rest are unmoulted yet clearly ad-type, therefore it is an ad. [6A00039]

3cy+ (female), March. Another example of two ad generations. Left R2 and right R5 are unmoulted yet ad-type. It is typical of females to not have completed the RR moult by early spring. [6432308]

1cy male, October. The penises in 1cy are very narrow in diameter. Typically the whole length of the penis can be seen, unlike in 2cy+. [6A00050]

2cy+ male, October. In ad, penises are quite long, but fully extracting it from the cloaca is not necessary: the folded penis can clearly be seen to be wider in diameter than in young birds. [6A00039]

1cy (female), October. T2 < P7, therefore 1cy. [6A00055]

2cy+ (male), October. T2 > P6 and T2 not freshly moulted: therefore ad. [6A00039]

1cy male, October. T1 duller than in ad male. Note long, narrow, point-tipped and frayed TC which can show a narrow buff fringe. Young males typically show juv TT and TC until Nov-Dec. [6A00050]

1cy female, August. Such a dull T1 is typical of young females, but beware of individual variation. Note long, narrow and point-tipped TC with a white fringe that can also be absent or reduced due to abrasion. Young females typically show juv TT and TC until Mar. [6456714]

2cy+ male, October. Deep-black band in T1, edged by a pearly grey. Note short, broad, round-tipped, grey and good quality TC. [6A00032]

2cy+ female, October. T1 can be like in young males, but black band is typically duller. Note short, broad, round-tipped and good quality TC with a distinct white fringe. [6A00049]

1cy (male), October. Narrow outer GC with edges converging towards rounded tip. Narrow LC and MC tapering to a narrow tip. These are often fringed in young females. There is much variation in these characters. [6A00051]

2cy+ (female), October. Broad outer GC with parallel edges and square tip. Broad and unfringed LC and MC with a wide round tip. There is much variation in these characters. [6A00053]

1cy (female), September. A juvenile-type outer wing: dull brown undertone, narrow PP and PC. The latter end in a point-tip. [6A00022]

1cy (male), October. Some individuals, like this one, show a quite intermediate outer wing. [6A00051]

2cy+ (female), October. An ad-type outer wing: glossy grey undertone, very broad PP and PC. The latter end in a round tip. [6A00049]

2cy+ (male), October. Some ad like this individual can show fairly narrow PP and narrow and point-tipped PC. Notice, however, the glossy grey undertone. [6A00037]

1cy female, September. Number of spots can be very variable, from none (as in males) to many and large and clustered (as in adult females), but typically between 1 and 8, small and separate. For males, the bill is not a reliable ageing criterion. [6432637]

1cy female, October. Variation. Fairly intermediate bill-spotting. [7066255]

2cy+ female, October. Many spots, large and clustered. [6A00044]

2cy+ female, October. Variation. Atypically few bill-spots. [6A00040]
