Linnaria cannabina - Sexing autumn

Common Linnet

SEXING:

After the post-juv moult, sexing is generally straightforward based on colour and pattern of head, breast, and upperparts. If aged incorrectly, birds in completely juv plumage (with no moult contrasts) may be mistaken for ad females, but ground colour of head and body is warmer buff or brown and body feathers typically loosely textured.

According to Svensson (1992), many birds may be sexed already in juv plumage based on the amount of white in the outer vanes on the inner visible part of the inner PP, bordering tips of PC, but some birds ambiguous:

  • In males, white on innermost visible 5 mm of outer vanes of PP 7-9 reaches shaft or separated from shaft by a narrow black line (<0,5 mm).
  • In females, white on innermost visible 5 mm of outer vanes of PP 7-9 separated from shaft by a wider black line (>0,5 mm, generally 1 mm broad), roughly corresponding to half of total width of outer vane.
  • Some birds, presumably males (Svensson, 1992), are intermediate (black line generally 0,5-0,75 mm), and should be left unsexed.

After post-juvenile moult, the following criteria may be used:

Male:

  • Breast and forehead raspberry red, sometimes hidden by buff fringes in fresh autumn plumage. Some, typically younger birds, have very little red, more orange, yellowish, or even port-coloured markings, but these are rounded, never streaked.
  • Flanks warm buff or salmon pink.
  • Nape light grey, contrasting with deep chestnut, lightly streaked upperparts.

Female:

  • Head and breast without red, or with faint reddish markings. Breast always, usually conspicuously, streaked dark.
  • Nape greyish brown, showing weaker contrast towards upperparts than in males.
  • Feathers of mantle, LC and MC dull rufous or earth-brown, often streaked prominently along shafts.

2cy+ male October. In freshly moulted plumage, rounded red markings on breast more or less covered by pale fringes. [DH51890]

1cy male September. A more streaked individual, bearing some resemblance to a female. Note rounded shape of red pattern on feathers of central part of breast. [DH49808]

1cy female September. Typical female showing heavily streaked breast and flanks. Somewhat streaked also on dull brown back, showing only faint contrast against brownish-grey nape. [DH51282]

1cy August. Very recently fledged bird, still in completely juv plumage. Note heavy streaking to breast and flanks, as well as warm brownish crown, cheeks and nape. Sexing based on body plumage not possible. [DE67688]

2cy+ male October. Male colours and patterns generally subdued in fresh plumage, but note rounded red markings on breast and flanks among thin streaking. Rear flank warmer buff, upperparts deeper chestnut and nape colder grey than in female. [CX59316]

1cy male September. After post-juv moult, showing deep chestnut back and upperwing coverts typical of males. Note also contrast between grey nape and back, as well as red markings on breast faintly visible underneath fresh pale fringes to be worn off during the coming months. [DH49808]

1cy female October. Although showing some reddish markings, breast heavily streaked dark. Weaker contrast between nape and back than in males. LC, MC and innermost three GC post-juv, contrasting with otherwise juv wing, though less vividly chestnut/rufous than in males. [DB08632]

1cy August. A bird in completely juv plumage, showing coarsly streaked breast, as well as prominent streaking on mantle, LC and MC. Head warm buff, not contrasting with back. Sexing by plumage not possible except by assessment of amount of white at base of inner primaries. [DC40699]
