After completion of post-juvenile moult, readily sexed based on the pattern/colour of LC and head.

Male, 1cy, October. Pattern of LC very variable, and the bird shown here is darker (more female-like) than average. Smaller (frontal) LC largely coloured in vivid orange with varying degree of dark spotting (many 1cy male show very few spots and are rather similar to adult males). [1ET80898]

Female, 1cy, September. LC blackish with rusty tips. [1ET80461]

Male, 2cy+, September. LC vividly orange, with no or few dark spots. [1ET80460]

Female, 2cy+, November. LC with dark centres and rather broad rusty (or rusty-orange) tips and edges. [1ET81035]

Male, 1cy, October. Feathers of head and cheek with jet-black bases, to a variable degree concealed by pale tips that wears off during winter. [1ET80601]
