MOULT

                     Adult         Young

Summer       SC*             sp

Winter           wp             wp

Young sp: The post-juvenile moult includes most of body (a few uppertail-coverts are often left unmoulted), usually all LC, a variable number of MC and some inner GC (92% of the birds at Ottenby included 1-3 GC, but range include 0-8). TT and RR are usually not included, although exceptions occur rarely.
Young wp: The pre-breeding moult is generally more extensive than the post-juvenile moult. No, some or (rarely) all LC and MC are included, and most birds moult 5-7 inner GC. All three TT are generally included and many birds also moult 1-3 innermost SS. According to most sources RR are not (or only rarely) included but, surprisingly, birds showing single or several moulted RR are not uncommon at Ottenby.
Adult SC: The post-breeding moult generally includes the whole plumage, but S6 (and occasionally several inner SS) is often retained.
Adult wp: The pre-breeding moult is rather variable.

Number of GC included in the post-juvenile moult shown as percentage of 1cy birds at Ottenby 2000-2014 (n=511).

Number of GC included in the pre-breeding moult shown as percentage of 2cy and 3cy+ birds at Ottenby 2010-2014 (n=308).
