Note: Regarding the timing and extent of moult, the literature is limited and often contradicting. Any moult patterns suggested and recorded are inferred from Ottenby alone and may vary at other sites, but should be generally comparable.

Young sp: The post-juv moult includes the entire head and body.

Young wp: The extent of the pre-br moult is relatively unknown and understudied in young Jack Snipes. Spring birds at Ottenby have shown moult of some wing coverts (LC, MC), almost always some TT (restricted to the inner two) and sometimes including RR and under tail-c.

Adult SC*: The post-br moult (Jul to Oct) is complete, but a majority of birds interrupt the moult during migration and retain some feathers in different parts of the wing, for example single/some SS, MC and LC. But the most regularly retained feather group is the humeral coverts; often 1-4 humeral coverts will be retained, as also seen in Common Snipe (Janiszewski, T. and R. Włodarczyk. 2007).
Adult wp: The pre-br moult (from Feb to May) includes body and head, some wing coverts, and rarely tertials and tail. Tertial moult appears less common in adults than 2cy birds, however, this could be an artifact of a lower sample size with fewer adults trapped at Ottenby during the spring.
