Jack Snipe

AGE – BEST CRITERIA:

Ad (2cy+) Jack Snipes have shown to consistently retain part of the plumage, especially in early autumn. Most commonly, 1-4 humeral-c and some wing-c are retained, but also regularly demonstrating single or several retained SS and even PP in some individuals. We propose the following criteria, in order of accuracy, as the best characteristics to separate the age classes:

  • Presence of retained feathers
  • Outer RR pattern
  • PC pattern
  • Outer PP structure and shape
  • Colour and quality of TT and wing coverts

All characters still largely useful in the spring.

1cy:

  • Uniform plumage lacking clear moult contrasts from retained worn feathers.
  • Typical juv RR show a slightly narrower and pointed shape and a more complete pale/whitish tip to the feather which is centrally split by a dark ”channel”. However, atypical patterns occur and some may closely resemble ad-type RR pattern, so care must be taken.
  • All PC tips showing significant white markings, either complete tip edge or tip corners.
  • Juv PP demonstrate a narrower shape and more pointed tips and appear, on average, more worn and show a lighter browner tone later in the autumn.
  • Juv under tail-c show a reduced, thinner centre spot, if present at all.
  • MC, on average, appear paler and more readily worn with reduced white tip. However, some 1cy individuals have demonstrated MC barely, if at all, discernible from 2cy+.
  • TT on average sligtly colder in colour, looser in texture and with less bold markings, but often inseparable from ad.
  • In early autumn, some young birds may still present dark brown leg markings as found when young chicks.

2cy+:

  • More often than not, moult contrast (retained worn and brownish feathers) can be found in humeral-c, wing-c and/or SS and, on rare occasions, PP.
  • RR broader and more rounded, typically with a buffish tip on the outer vane and reduced pale on the inner.
  • Tips of outer PC (6-9) lacking white edge completely or near. This appears to be a consistent character in birds trapped at Ottenby and seemingly undescribed in previous literature.
  • Ad PP better kept, darker and glossier with, on average, a blunter/squared tip.
  • TT fresh, deeper tan tones and bolder markings, but often inseparable from some well marked, fresh 1cy.
  • Under tail-c with thick, dark, oval markings around the shaft towards the tip of the feathers.

1cy, October. Typical juv outer RR pattern with complete pale tip to the feather, split by a dark central 'channel'. The RR are slightly narrower and pointier than ad. [3706663]

1cy, November. Less typical juv shape with a broader and rounder impression. Pattern less typically juv, but still demonstrating a complete pale tip but with larger central 'channel'. [3701285]

2cy+, October. Typical example of ad-type outer RR pattern. Large dark ‘channel’ because of reduced pale markings on the inner vane. Note also broader and rounder feathers. [3710243]

2cy+, October. Another typical ad pattern with pale buff predominantly on the outer vane, and diffused on the inner. [3706679]

1cy, November. Uniform juv SS. No discernible patterns were found to differentiate between age classes. [3701287]

2cy+, September. SS2-4 retained during the complete moult, now being slightly browner and more worn than adjacent newly moulted SS. [3710235]

2cy+, October. Retained humeral covert. The most regularly retained feather group, but easily missed in routine examination. [4753308]

2cy+, October. Humeral covert 1 retained, faintly bleached due to protection. Otherwise, a wholly uniform bird. [3706682]

1cy, October. White present on all primary coverts. [4598973]

1cy, September. Juv PC, again showing white on all feather tips. [3706631]

2cy+, September. The proposed typical ad pattern of the PC with white nearly or completely absent on outer PC. [4792776]

2cy+, September. Another ad bird showing little to no white on outer PC. [3706630]

1cy, September. Typically pointed and brownish outer primaries of a juv bird in late September. [3706631]

2cy+, October. Blunter and more squared shape of ad primaries and better kept despite being in late October. [3710025]

1cy, November. Typical pattern of juv under tail-c. Note the loose feather structure. [3701285]

2cy+, October. Typical ad-pattern of under tail-c with strong, dark markings. Note denser feather structure [3706679]

1cy, October. Juv MC, on average, appear paler, often more worn and with reduced white tip. But the overlap is large and many are practically identical to ad. [4753307]

1cy, November. A more difficult juv wing where the MC is very similar to ad. [3701286]

2cy+, September. Pattern and colour of ad MC on average slightly darker and with wider paler tips. [3710235]

2cy+, October. More relevant than the feather pattern is the retention of wing coverts seen in many ad individuals. Note here several retained MC and LC. (The image light intensity have been increased in order to make the contrasts better visible) . [3710025]

1cy, November. The pattern of TT is highly variable in both age groups. The colouration and overall quality seems to be the best indication, but is sometimes difficult to judge. In general, juv TT show colder (less orange) tones and more wear. [3701286]

2cy+, September. Ad TT are, on average, a trifle warmer in the colouration and show denser texture than average juv. [3706630]

1cy, October. Dark markings persist in the early autumn into October. Most notably around the ankle joint (see arrow) and up the tibia. [3706663]

2cy+, September. Dark markings are lacking. Leg colour seems to vary significantly in adults, ranging from pale green to blueish pink. [3710243]
