Emberiza hortulana - autumn

Ortolan Bunting

AGE – BEST CRITERIA:

1cy birds shows uniform and fresh juv SS. Moult contrasts between fresh post-juv and (reasonably) fresh juv feathers may be found in GC and more rarely in AL and RR. Adult birds show a variable number of very bleached and worn suspended feathers among e.g. SS, MC, LC and often RR.

1cy:

  • SS (and PP) consists of one single uniform generation that remains rather fresh during much of the autumn.
  • Moult contrasts are often found among inner GC (or between post-juv MC and juv GC) and sometimes within AL and RR.
  • Juv RR are slightly narrower, more pointed and of less good general quality than ad-type RR. Some birds may include R1 in the post-juv moult.
  • Juv PC usually shows a slightly looser texture and more worn tips and edges compared to ad-type.

2cy+:

  • Retained and clearly bleached and worn feathers from the pre-br moult (last winter) are still present among SS, LC, MC and sometimes in RR and TT.
  • RR either very fresh ad type, rather broad, rounded and of good quality, or mixed with some retained very worn pre-br feathers from last winter.
  • PC of ad type; fresh, rather broad and glossy looking.

1cy September (Mongolia). LC and MC post-juv. Rest of wing is juv, uniform and still fresh. [90764483]

1cy September (Mongolia). Similar to previous bird, but showing post-juv GC9. [ring unknown]

2cy+ September (Mongolia). Much of wing fresh pre-br, but note suspension with retained and worn SS, innermost AL, most MC and a few LC. [90764551]

2cy+ September (Mongolia). Similar to the previous bird, but with more retained MC and LC. Note variation in the degree of abrasion of retained feathers. [82406635]

1cy September (Mongolia). LC and MC post-juv, but the rest of the wing is uniformly juv. [90764531]

1cy September (Mongolia). Similar to the previous bird, but with post-juv GC8. [90764647]

2cy+ September (Mongolia). Most MC, some LC and innermost AL retained (pre-br, from last winter) and clearly worn. Remaining coverts are fresh post-br. [90764551]

2cy+ September (Mongolia). Similar to the previous bird, but with more retained MC and LC and all three AL post-br. [82406635]

1cy September (Mongolia). Juv RR are generally slightly narrower and show more pointed tips than fresh post-br adult ones. Because of lower feather quality, some bleach and wear may appear already from mid-autumn and onwards. [90764483]

1cy September (Mongolia). Another set of juv RR, illustrating variation in shape. Note that a few 1cy (though not this one) may show post-juv R1. [82447891]

2cy+ September (Mongolia). A full set of adult type post-br RR. Note that adult RR are generally in better condition, slightly broader with more blunt shaped tips. [90764551]

2cy+ September (Mongolia). Some ad birds retain one or several pre-br RR (from last winter). By now, these feathers are extremely worn and show sharp contrast to the freshly moulted post-br RR. [82406635]
