MOULT

                     Adult         Young

Summer       SC              sp*

Winter           –                 –

Young sp: The post-juvenile moult includes the body, LC, MC, a variable number of GC (93% of our birds at Ottenby included 3-9 GC, but range includes 0-10), 0-3 TT and often some (sometimes even all) RR. Jenni & Winkler (1994) mentions rare cases with more extensive moult, including PP (perhaps more common in southern populations?). Conversely, a few birds (probably from late broods) may show unmoulted juvenile plumage even during winter, see e.g. Senar (1988).
Adult SC: The post-breeding moult includes the whole plumage.

Number of GC included in the post-juvenile moult shown as percentage of 1cy birds at Ottenby 2000-2013 (n=1040).
